Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders and Bruxism

Ali has specialist clinical knowledge in the assessment and evidence-based treatment of TMJ disorders and bruxism — conditions frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed in primary care. TMJ dysfunction can cause jaw pain, clicking, headaches, facial pain, ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, and neck tension. Bruxism, the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, affects up to 31% of the population and is strongly linked to anxiety, stress, and emotional arousal in 70-80% of cases.

Some of the contributing factors include:

  • Anxiety, chronic stress and emotional arousal (strongest link)

  • Sleep disorders and poor sleep quality

  • Caffeine and alcohol consumption

  • Certain medications including SSRIs

  • Genetic predisposition

Treatment at Physiome Kensington includes:

  • Manual therapy to the jaw, neck and upper thoracic spine

  • Dry needling and acupuncture for muscle tension and pain relief

  • Targeted jaw and postural exercise rehabilitation

  • Patient education on jaw mechanics and self-management strategies

  • CBT-based anxiety and panic attack management to address the psychological root cause of bruxism — reducing teeth grinding, jaw clenching and TMJ flare-ups at source

Ali integrated approach treats both the physical mechanics of the jaw and the underlying anxiety driving the condition — delivering more sustainable long-term outcomes with holistic approach than purely mechanical or dental treatments alone.
