BODY MOT IN SOUTH KENSINGTON

You service your car every year whether or not it's making a noise. Most people give their body no equivalent — they wait until something hurts, and by then the problem has usually been building for months.

A Body MOT is a structured head-to-toe check of how you move, where you're strong, where you're stiff and what's likely to cause you trouble. You don't need to be in pain to have one. In fact, it's more useful if you're not.

It's designed for people who want a baseline — anyone who sits at a desk all week, has started exercising after a long gap, is getting older and noticing it, or simply wants to know what state they're actually in rather than guessing. Physiome is based inside Ethos Sports Centre in South Kensington, with gym and rehab space on site. Sessions are 30 minutes, one-to-one with a HCPC-registered physiotherapist. Our clinic regularly supports clients from Belgravia, Pimlico, Earl's Court, Notting Hill, Paddington, Marylebone, Soho, Fulham, Hammersmith, Shepherd's Bush, Mayfair, Covent Garden, and central London areas.

WHO IT'S FOR

  • Desk workers with tightness, stiffness or nagging low-level aches
  • Anyone returning to exercise after time off
  • People in their 40s, 50s and beyond wanting to stay ahead of decline
  • Anyone with recurring niggles that keep coming back to the same place
  • People starting a new activity who want to begin well
  • Anyone who's been told "there's nothing wrong" but doesn't feel right
  • People who simply want an honest baseline of their physical condition

WHAT THE BODY MOT COVERS

History and lifestyle

Your work setup, activity levels, previous injuries, current aches and what you want to be able to do.

Posture and alignment

Standing and seated posture, spinal alignment, and where sustained positions are creating load.

Joint range of movement

A systematic check through the spine, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles — identifying restriction and asymmetry.

Movement screening

How you squat, hinge, lunge, reach overhead, rotate and balance on one leg. This is where problems tend to reveal themselves.

Strength testing

Key muscle groups tested and compared left to right, against what your daily life and activities actually demand.

Balance and control

Single-leg balance and control, which decline earlier than most people realise and matter more than most people think.

Findings and plan

A clear explanation of what we found, what matters and what doesn't, and a prioritised programme addressing the things most likely to cause you problems.

HOW IT WORKS

WHAT YOU GET

A full Body MOT is delivered across two 30-minute sessions.

  • An honest picture of your current physical condition, in plain language
  • Identification of the things most likely to cause you problems, ranked by priority
  • Objective measures you can be retested against later
  • A programme of three or four exercises that address the priorities, not a list of twenty
  • Practical advice on your desk setup, daily habits and activity
  • Clear guidance on anything that needs proper assessment or treatment
  • Session one. History, posture, joint range and movement screening. We'll flag anything obvious as we go.
  • Session two. Strength and balance testing, then a full discussion of the findings and your programme.

Splitting it means each part gets done properly rather than rushed. If you'd rather focus on a specific region — a spine and hips check, or upper body only — that can be covered in a single session.

WHAT IT ISN'T

  • It isn't a medical check-up. We don't do blood tests, blood pressure, cholesterol or anything cardiovascular — see your GP for those.
  • It isn't a treatment session. If we find something that needs treating, we'll tell you and you can book a physiotherapy appointment. The MOT is about finding things, not fixing them on the day.
  • It isn't a body composition or fitness test. No body fat percentage, no VO2 max. This is about how you move and how strong you are.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Appointments are 30 minutes at Ethos Sports Centre, South Kensington. Wear kit you can move in — shorts and a t-shirt are ideal, and bring trainers.
  • You'll be moving throughout, so come ready to work rather than expecting to lie on a couch. We'll explain what we're seeing as we go.
  • Bring details of any previous injuries, surgery or ongoing conditions.

FAQs

Do I need to be in pain to book?

No — and it's more useful if you're not. The point is to find problems while they're still easy to address.

How is this different from a Sports Assessment?

A Sports Assessment is geared towards athletes and specific sports, focusing on performance and injury risk in training. A Body MOT is broader and aimed at general health and daily function. If you train seriously for a sport, book the Sports Assessment. If you want a general check, book this.

How long does it take?

A full Body MOT is two 30-minute sessions. A focused check on one region can be done in one.

How often should I have one?

Annually suits most people, or every six months if you're actively working on something specific or managing a long-term issue.

What if you find something wrong?

We'll explain it clearly and tell you what to do about it — whether that's exercises to get on with yourself, a course of physiotherapy, or seeing your GP if it needs medical investigation.

Will I definitely be told I need treatment?

No. Plenty of people leave with a couple of exercises and nothing more. If you're in good shape, we'll say so.

Do I need to be fit to do it?

No. The assessment adapts to whatever level you're at.

Will I get anything in writing?

Yes. You'll receive a summary of the findings and your programme after the second session.

Is it covered by private health insurance?

Usually not — screening and preventative assessment generally falls outside policy cover. Check with your insurer if unsure.
